In the summer 2013 I have conducted a research internship at FEMI Foundation, an NGO which carries out holistic development projects in Tanzania. Specifically, I have worked in the village of Mtakuja, near Moshi (Kilimanjaro), on an artistic project which sought to apply the participatory theatre methodology developed by Augusto Boal to facilitate discussion of sensitive issues in the community. I worked on this project jointly with a local theatre group. The project targeted issues affecting primarily women and children, such as female genital cutting, sanitation and early pregnancy. The project was part of the UCU East Africa programme offered as part of my undergraduate degree at University College Utrecht.
